For each app we provide an overview, what makes it so unique, devices it’s compatible with, who it’s designed for, and pricing. We hope this saves you time so you can get right into your workout. If we had to recommend just one app, it’d be HomeCourt because it’s super comprehensive and motivating — and there’s even a free level you can begin with!

You can also develop your basketball IQ anytime, anywhere, with our fun basketball IQ card game (here for beginners and here for advanced), created in partnership with a Nike basketball trainer! And create great goals and keep track of your progress with our helpful printable journal.

Best free basketball training apps

If you’re looking for some basketball workout inspiration, stat tracking, and more all for cheap, here are a few free basketball training apps we think you’ll enjoy.

1. Nike HomeCourt

Nike’s HomeCourt is one of our favorite free, interactive basketball app because it can help players of any level get better – and there’s no extra technology required to get it set up. We use this one pretty much every day. The app can track your self-designed workouts and your stats. Or you can choose from a bunch of challenges, interactive drills and instructions from NBA and WNBA athletes to complete. What’s really cool is that the app makes your workout feel like you’re inside a game, with an immersive live-action experience powered by AR (augmented reality), with virtual targets, audio cues, bonus levels, points and badges. Plus, it makes it easy to compete against your friends: you can even challenge a teammate to any HomeCourt activity with a time-shifted “Battle Mode” that matches you up head-to-head.

What’s most unique: As an added bonus, participants who opt-in to NBA Global Scout are eligible to receive invitations to select NBA tryouts, camps, tournaments, and showcases!

Price: The free version of the app includes access to the full library of 100+ drills and activities. Get unlimited shot tracking. However, you can only see your results and workouts from that day. If you want to be able to go back and reference previous workouts, you’ll want to upgrade to HomeCourt Plus.

HomeCourt Plus has your full workout history, complete skill ratings, the ability to join the members-only training club, request feedback from HomeCourt pro trainers, participate in HomeCourt Global Camp, and create up to four user profiles. You can get it as a subscription as either monthly ($7.99) or yearly auto-renewable ($69.99).

Expert reviews: 4.6 out of 5 on the Apple App Store. “The HomeCourt App is absolutely amazing! I use it everyday to track my basketball workouts. You can compete in periodic challenges with players all over the world or increase your skills each day to rise to the tops of the leaderboards.”

By the way, if you love HomeCourt’s ball-handling workouts, you might also love DribbleTag. It’s a new interactive motion game, now available cross-platform in the free Active Arcade app (which works on Android!).

2. Are You A Bucket?

This app is such a fun game to play when you’ve got at least two people. It’s free to download and to access a few cards. The complete version costs $2.99 though. But it’s totally worth it! Basically it helps you play 1-on-1 in the most game realistic and challenging format ever created for the game of basketball. It’s designed by Impossible Training’s Micah Lancaster.

The app’s game will challenge your skills, IQ, and shot making ability through drawing cards that contain realistic constraints, bonuses, and penalties for each possession. Basically you have to follow the instructions on your card – including dribble constraints and types of scoring, and see if you can score that way. If you do, you earn the number of points the card is worth. The game’s objective is to be the first to reach fifteen points.

Improve your workouts and improve your game with the Pure Sweat Basketball Workouts app. In this app, NBA Skills Coach, Drew Hanlen guides you through a diverse but simple collection of comprehensive skill workouts, based on what you need to work on and how long you have to work. There are workouts for players of all levels that can be done individually or with a partner or coach. Also the activity tab allows you to see exactly how much time you are working in each category. Our only criticism of this app is there is too much focus on getting as many reps as possible, rather than just having a few moves for a lot of quality reps. And ideally the drills would be a little more challenging.

The beauty of this app is that it not only provides a solution for players at any level lacking a strategic plan as to how to go about their workouts, but it does so in a way that is simple, efficient, and purposeful.
