Sue Bird, the queen of the court, just got a plastic makeover, and it’s every bit as legendary as her game. On Tuesday July 16, Mattel unveiled a new Barbie doll inspired by none other than WNBA legend Sue Bird.

The Sue Bird Barbie is part of Mattel’s “Sheroes” collection, celebrating women who have broken boundaries and inspired countless individuals. Bird will join Alexa Moreno, Mary Fowler, Christine Sinclair, Estelle Mossely, Federica Pellegrini, Susana Rodriguez, Ewa Swoboda and Venus Williams as athletes who are part of the initiative. Bird’s doll is the only one available for purchase.

Bird, a four-time WNBA champion and five-time Olympic gold medalist, embodies the perfect blend of athletic prowess and cultural impact. This new Barbie doesn’t just look the part; it’s designed with functionality in mind, featuring a “Made to Move” body sculpt that allows the doll to bend its elbows and knees, letting children and collectors alike pose it in action-packed basketball moves.

Bird hopes this Barbie will encourage young girls to pursue their athletic potential, and expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Now little girls and little boys are going to see a professional women’s basketball player in the form of a Barbie and they’re going to tap into that story, they’re going to tap into that career and they’re going to think ‘Oh, this is something I could do. And that’s really powerful.”

The Sue Bird Barbie comes dressed in a red and blue uniform, complete with Bird’s signature number 10. The attention to detail is impeccable, from the realistic facial features to the miniature basketball shoes, making it a must-have for fans of the sport.

“The one characteristic that probably is most represented on the doll is just how meticulous and careful I was with my hair. It’s just a simple ponytail, but I took a lot of pride in making sure there were no flyaways. Because for me, when I played, it was really important that I didn’t have to worry about anything else but playing,” Bird said.

The limited-edition Sue Bird Barbie doll is now available for $30 on Mattel’s official website and Amazon. Whether you’re a dedicated WNBA fan, a collector of unique Barbie dolls, or someone who appreciates the fusion of sports and style, this release is a slam dunk.
